US media named him as Sayfullo Saipov, a Florida resident who came to the US in 2010.
He was armed with a paintball gun and pellets.

They also declined to reveal which hospital the man was being treated in.
"Many" people were injured in the attack, with possibly 12 people needing medical attention.
Could this be the New York attacker?
The unnamed man drove a pickup truck down the wrong way down a cycle path in a "cowardly" terror attack in downtown Manhattan.
New York City Police confirmed the truck, which appears to be a Home Depot rental van, drove onto a pedestrian and cycle path alongside the West Side Highway at full speed, hitting several people.
The truck then hit a school bus, which was carrying two adults and two children.
4 News reported the driver then allegedly screamed 'Allahu Akbar' and got out of the vehicle.

Police at the scene of the terror attack in New York
A spokesperson for the US Department of Homeland Security called the incident an "apparent act of terrorism."
The driver entered the bike path in lower Manhattan at 3.05pm, New York City Police Commissioner James O'Neill said, adding that he was armed with a paint-ball gun and a pellet gun.
Two children and two adults were injured when the truck ploughded into the school bus, he said.
Mr O'Neill said the suspect was driving a rented Home Depot truck, but said police would not disclose at this time where the truck was rented.
After the attack, mangled and flattened bicycles littered the bike path, which runs parallel to the West Side Highway on the western edge of Manhattan along the Hudson River.
Of the eight people killed, six were pronounced dead at the scene and two more were pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, Mr O'Neill said.
