New Mutants trailer: X-Men goes HORROR in terrifying first look at spin-off – WATCH

.

The X-Men spin-off, due for release in 2018, stars Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair, aka Wolfsbane.

Alongside her are Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Alice Braga and more.

The trailer was confirmed yesterday for 0:01 PST, translating to 08:01 BST in the UK; and certainly gave fans something to get excited about over breakfast.

The clip showcases a much more horror-oriented film than fans of the franchise will be used to; with the teaser heavy on jump-scares and slow-building moments of tension.

Director Josh Boone had promised on Instagram yesterday: “There’s Something New To Fear #tomorrow #newmutants #teaser #xmen #thenewmutants #fridaythe13th.”

Described as a “haunted house movie with horny teenagers”, per ComicBook.com, the Marvel movie is due for release next April.

Safe to say, it looks like a spine-tingling affair; much more deliberately terrifying than other X-Men movies.

Interestingly, a slight change of tone worked wonders for Marvel earlier this year when Logan – noted for its dark undertones – performed very well with critics and audiences.

Anya Taylor-Joy has recently spoken about how faithful New Mutants will be to the comics, telling Hey U Guys: "I think the nicest thing about it is that Josh Boone, our director – he's just such a fan of the comics, and he really loves them so much that he's really interested in just making sure that we do the comics justice for the people that love the characters.

"You know, we all feel so lucky to be such incredibly loved characters.

"So, while it's definitely a departure from the X-Men movies, the fans won't be disappointed. We definitely kept all the important bits in there."

Taylor-Joy plays Magik, a Russian girl who can teleport – and is the sister of popular character Colossus.

Elsewhere, Stranger Things star Charlie Heaton is Cannonball, who can propel himself through the air; and Sunspot, played by Henry Zaga, who can manipulate solar energy.

The part was played by Adan Canto in Days of Future Past.

Blu Hunt is also on board as Mirage, who can create illusions dawn from the fears and desires of a person's mind.

That said, there's little display of the characters' individual powers in the trailer.

Fans have responded well to the first-look so far.

Not only has New Mutants been trending on Twitter, the trailer has also accrued a healthy 25,000 views on YouTube in just two hours – not bad considering its launch was overnight in the US.

The conversation it has sparked has been mostly positive.

"This is an interesting approach. I like it," one said after watching.

"I'M SO GLAD TO BE ALIVE, THANK YOU SO MUCH," someone else enthused.

"Wasn't expecting that. You have my attention #NewMutants," a third wrote.

It's not all positive, however, with some sceptical about the unexpected edge of horror.

"Where. Are. The. Powers? We want the damn powers! #NewMutants," read one tweet.

Another asked: "Honestly don't know what to make of that #NewMutants trailer. Is it a contained horror thriller? What is it?"

New Mutants is out on April 13, 2018.
