Instead, the Everton star was charged by police for drink driving – and had to endure the added indignity of being arrested with a woman who was not his wife, Coleen.
He has since been slapped with a two-year ban, given a 12 month community order, and sentenced to 120 hours of unpaid work.
But Wilkins has defended the former Manchester United striker, saying 'it is just one of those things.'

"Unfortunately Wayne has been involved in certain situations of late.
"I hope he gets through this little situation he finds himself in, especially with the family situation."

Rooney failed to score on his return to United last week as Jose Mourinho's men ran riot.
