Everton News: Wayne Rooney drink driving DEFENDED by Ray Wilkins in shock statement

Rooney made the headlines during the recent international break – but not for his antics on the pitch.

Instead, the Everton star was charged by police for drink driving – and had to endure the added indignity of being arrested with a woman who was not his wife, Coleen.

He has since been slapped with a two-year ban, given a 12 month community order, and sentenced to 120 hours of unpaid work.

But Wilkins has defended the former Manchester United striker, saying 'it is just one of those things.'

Everton News: Ray Wilkins has sensationally defended Wayne Rooney

"If everybody out there can say they haven't got in their motor car and driven without a couple of beers or whatever they've driven with – then good luck to them.

"But – he's been caught."

Rooney failed to score on his return to United last week as Jose Mourinho's men ran riot.

But the former England captain will be hoping to get on the scoresheet when Everton face Bournemouth (3pm).
